Chapter Fifteen

Libby

“Are you fucking kidding me right now?” Libby asked.

She couldn’t believe he was standing there and asking her that infuriating question. She couldn’t believe she hadn’t already slapped the taste out of his mouth as soon as he began his insinuations. They’d literally been back in her apartment for sixty seconds before he’d started. This was so typical, though. So typical of him. She couldn’t believe she hadn’t seen it coming.

“It’s a simple yes or no question, Libby,” Wentworth repeated, his voice calm and steady.

Libby had to reel herself in as she watched him stand there. His arms were crossed over his chest as he looked at her. He was studying her. Studying her movements. Studying her expression and her body language as he waited for her answer.

“If you’re going to be like this tonight, Went,” she sighed, “then you can just go. Stay somewhere else. You’re not staying here if you’re going to continue to ask me stupid questions.”

“If you weren’t, then all you have to say is no,” he replied.

“And entertain the ridiculous notion that me and Hamish Dawson were doing anything except talking tonight?” she asked, raising an eyebrow in his direction.

“It looked like more than talking to me,” he mumbled.

“And it always does,” Libby said, throwing her hands up in defeat. “It always looks like more than talking to you, doesn’t it? Do you just not want me to talk to people at parties, is that it?”

“You can talk to whoever you want to at parties,” he replied, “but I saw the way he was looking at you.”

“Of course you did,” she scoffed, the sarcasm dripping from her every word, “cause I mean obviously if he was checking me out then I must have wanted to sleep with him.”

“I know what I saw,” Wentworth said, not backing down in the slightest as he continued to maintain her eye contact. “You were flirting with him too.”

Libby rolled her eyes. When Wentworth was in one of his jealous mindsets there was literally nothing she could do or say to get him out of it. Back in the early days of their relationship she would plead with him to see reason. She would tell him over and over again how much she loved him. She would tell him she only had eyes for him. She’d stroke his ego in all the ways she needed to talk him down, but they’d been together for more than six months now. He should’ve known how she felt about him. She shouldn’t have to remind him just to boost his self-esteem. She shouldn’t need to, and she wouldn’t tonight. She wouldn’t do it anymore.

“Get out,” Libby said, her voice calm as she pointed to the front door. “Get out, Went.”

“Why can’t you just tell me you weren’t flirting with him?!” Wentworth asked, his tone rising when he realized Libby wasn’t going to do the usual tonight.

“Because I shouldn’t have to remind you,” she replied as she walked to the front door and opened it.
